I hate TV. No really. I really hate it. When I was recovering from food poisoning I watched a bunch of TV at my paren't house. Digital cable. Blocky, yukky, artifacty, digital cable. I mean the video quality of standard-def digital cable is terrible. And even worse when there's a football game on. It's really annoying. I swear the quality of TV got worse when it went all "digital" a few months ago.
So why is the quality so much better when I watch the last episode of Leverage online (via Matt Dentler)? I mean it's a HUGE amount better. Boy, if ever anything were going to kill regular TV for me, better quality Internet-TV would be it.

I think the satellite services deliver a better quality picture than any of the digital cable services I've seen. I'm pretty sure it would take about 10 minutes for any actual competition to kill the cable and telephone companies.
Which is the problem with internet TV. It is hard to get internet service without dealing with a cable or telephone company.
Exactly. I don't understand why cable Internet TV is better quality than cable digital TV. Aren't they all h264? Or is it because the digital TV has to be real time to the bandwidth is lower?
The only people I know with satellite live out in the country. That's odd, isn't it? Actually, my apartment faces a southerly direction and out over the open expanse of the PATH system so I could probably put a dish outside my window if I wanted. But Verizon gave me such a good DSL deal I just had to take it...
I bet the cable guys are still using MPEG-2, DVD-style. And it's probably constant bit rate (and a relatively low constant bit rate). An H.264-encoded picture at the same bitrate would probably look awesome. Or better, at least.
One of my many gripes with the cable companies. They'd rather lobby Congress to protect their market share than keep up with technology to stay competitive.
Stacey and I have satellite even though we're pretty close to downtown. Because I hate the cable companies so very, very much.
I think that digital cable is variable -- which is why sports stuff makes the quality go down on other channels. I think.
I'm going for whatever the alien robots use to communicate with -- Internet via the aether or the 7th dimension or whatever...
